Herbs can be grown outdoor or indoor. You may want to start with a small garden that you can easily take care of, and if you want to be with your plants for the whole year or just for the winter season. If you want to plant indoors, better cultivate a windowsill herb garden so your herbs will receive their needed sunlight.

A windowsill herb garden is good for gardeners who want to stay close to their herbs. Also, these plants need minimum care to keep them thriving. You need to take note of some requirements, however, as herbs will not live if you totally neglect them. The basic necessities of any plants are light and water. Herbs are no different.

In your windowsill herb garden, include only plants that do not grow tall or big. Make sure you can fit your plants to the windowsill. Trim your plants regularly to keep them under control. Trimming will also make your herbs thick and bushy. Refrain from clipping the plants in winter time. It is encouraged to allow them to grow back a little so they will have protection against intense cold.

The southern part of the house usually receives the most sunlight. Herbs need this in order to grow, so make sure your windowsill herb garden is located in this area. A 10 to 12 hours sun exposure will be most profitable for most herbs, but not all. Know the background of your plants before exposing them too much in the sun. Turn your plants once in a while within the week so that every part receives the needed sun.

A south-facing windowsill herb garden will receive a good amount of sunlight, but it may not always be enough. To compensate for this, add an artificial light just above your plants so they will receive the right amount of light to thrive. Fluorescent light is most commonly used.

Containers must have a good drainage to prevent the water from collecting at the roots, as excess moisture causes root decay. If you place your herbs on pots, make small holes at the bottom to allow water to drain out. Also use potting mix rather than garden soil to prevent more water to stay at the roots. Soil born diseases will be prevented when using potting mix. Water only your herbs if the topsoil feels dry.

Chives, mint, rosemary, oregano, thyme, sage, basil, marjoram and parsley are your sure bet in your windowsill herb garden. They are easy to grow and do not grow very big. Apply fertilizer once every month, and do not overdo it. Too much fertilizer can affect the growth and even the flavor of your herb. Cut back on application during winter months as herb growth also slows down.

Herb gardening is good for your spirits, helping raise you vitality.

Hydroponic gardening has become very popular with many housewives simply because it is a great way of obtaining a harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables in a very short period of time. If you are worried about maintenance, hydroponic gardening requires the least amount of it. With the limited space and resources needed, one can be assured of getting a harvest full of fresh fruits and vegetables that are healthy, nutritious and safe to eat.

Hydroponic gardening utilizes certain techniques that were first introduced in the early 1900’s. The main ingredient used for the growing of plants is water, in addition to other growing mediums. You may wonder why such growing mediums are used when the traditional way of gardening doesn’t require such techniques. The root systems of the plants have to be fresh and strong in order to produce fruits and vegetables that are fresh and nutritious. These growing mediums support the root system as well as control the nutrients that are given to the plants.

Geographical areas that have soil that isn’t rich to grow plants can easily use the hydroponic gardening method to achieve better results. Indoor gardening also use the same method to grow flowers, etc. Some gardeners use a medium based system for their hydroponic gardening. One of the mediums includes Rock wool. The two primary ways of utilizing these mediums are static and continuous flow irrigation. The plants are suspended in a solution of water and nutrients for the Static solution. The plants are then given the appropriate light and are allowed to grow little by little. Each harvest requires a different placing of the solution. Extra nutrients are sometimes added during the growing season.

Another type is the use of continuous flow irrigation. Automated pumps are used for this purpose. A person who does hydroponic gardening can be sure of a higher yield. A large harvest that is full of fresh vegetables and fruits can be obtained regardless of the weather conditions, etc. Since soil isn’t used, plants will never get soil-borne diseases.

Hydroponic gardening also has its downsides. One fact remains that its costs are quite high. The heating and cooling procedures require a lot of money. Unless you have the required skill to manage and grow the plants, hydroponic gardening takes up a lot of time.

The author of this information love writing.

Hydroponic are fun and an interesting activity that is much easier than you think which can transform your garden. With hydroponics are an perfect when it comes to growing tomatoes, exotic flowers and food. How to do hydroponics? Hydroponics are raised indoors which can be grown in either a house or green house. If it is the case of greenhouse environment, this can be done through either sunlight or synthetic glow lights. The hydroponic system wants 3 essential things; natural or artificial light, solution which is nutrient which is applicable to plants and its conditions and something that can hold both the solution and the plant intact.

The standard hydroponic system is not that complex, it s a bucket filled with solution and net which is suspended so that the plant s roots are in touch with the solution. The solution is constantly should be replaced with fresh nutrients and water and also the plant needs to get enough sunlight on a daily basis. This system is more viable for individuals who live in flats. As hydroponics is demands a low budget investment and is more relevant for those aren t planning to grow a lot of veggies or plants. This method may not be suitable for serious gardners as through this, their gardning skills are not utilized. A hydroponic system can be adopted under a larger system rather than a small one.

To set up a hydroponic system for a typical home, a pre fabricated hydroponic kit needs to be purchased and assembled. Many portions of the kit can be easily made at home. The setup will dwell of 2 large plastic trays or beds, which will be needs rock wool media to fill the bed till the brim. A dilution nutrient solution needs to be mixed. The kit will have a reservoir and a pump system for distributing the nutrition solution.

The trays which are set on a platform to hold the plants are made for easy access for the gardener. The bottom beds are covered in uniformity by a rock wool, this will allow a clear flow of the both the nutrient and water solution through the beds. Drain is attached to the bed at one end and this is used for draining the nutrition solution back to the reservoir using gravity. The reservoir will have another hosepipe with a small electric pump; this feeds the solution to the other end of the opposite drain. Most hydroponic systems are do-it-yourself which can be constructed to suit your needs. Anyway, you got to have talent to do it in a classy way.

Are you one of those people who want to grow some plants at home but doesn t have enough space in the garden to do so? Well then say hello to your novel friend; home hydroponics. A little space is all you need to implement this system and the days when you got burnt in the sun is no more thanks to its indoor productivity nature. Spending hours and hours in the garden is no more a rquirement so you can grow plants in a modern way with minimum supervision.

Many individuals appear to think that hydroponics is a novel concept but really it has been more or less from the years of the Aztec civilization. However, the possibility of implementing home hydroponic systems didnt come in to pay until recently. With the hoopla produced around global warming such novel green ideas seem to have gained significant popularity.

Designing you own home hydroponics systems is not a tough task and you need not be an expert in order to do this. You could get all the tips you need from books and through the internet and design a simple home hydroponics system to suit your needs. Some Styrofoam, a big glass jar, plant nutrients together with an air bubbler like one used in marine museums would be all the stuff that you would need to begin on home hydroponics. If making a home hydroponics system looks daunting you could simply buy one. But be forewarned that they may not be as inexpensive as building one at home.

The very primary idea down the hydroponics idea is that plants do not need soil to grow. Soil is an anchor mechanism that acts as a mediator between the nutrients and the plants. So your home hydroponics systems will be using liquids and this might get as a bit of surprise to those who are not familiar with the matter.

Obtaining a good knowledge on home hydroponics would be sensible if you intend to do it yourself and the success of the whole project would largely depend on your understanding and commitment. You should get a serious enough understanding to build your own hydroponics system or at least plenty projecting to buy a good one that would accommodate your necessities. So start your green venture from home at the ease of a home hydroponics system!

Besides home hydroponic related information, the author of this review has been published many other information, some of them are about product reviews.

If you have cultivated an herb garden outside all summer and into the fall, you are probably disappointed that winter is so quickly approaching. You know the nutritional and health benefits to eating natural and fresh foods, and you do not want to have to stop gardening your own herbs. Do not dismay! You can easily bring your herb garden inside of your home for the winter. Your kitchen would be a great place to have a windowsill garden! By doing this, you can have fresh herbs all winter long.

Preparation

In order to successfully move your herbs into your home, you will have to have a windowsill that is in a sunny area. The best place to put your windowsill herb garden is a windowsill that gets at least five hours of sunlight per day and has minimal drafts. Often times a south or southeast facing window is perfect. Next, shop for your favorite herb plants~{Next, buy your favorite herb plants}~Next, purcahse your facorite herb plants}. Make sure that these are smaller plants as the area you will be planting them in is probably not as big as your outdoor space. After that, find a container that is about half a foot to a foot deep. If multiple herbs are what you plan to plant, get a long container. You will need the pot to be at least six inches deep for individual plants. Plant your herbs in the pots just as you would plant them outside (many gardeners have very specific ways that they plant their gardens, from different top soils to various potting mixes!).

Caring For Your Herbs

Once you have your herbs planted and set in the windowsill, make sure that you remember to care for them. However, do not over do it. While they were outside in your home herb garden you probably did not have to worry about watering them, but make sure that you water them on occasion when they are in your windowsill garden. Do keep in mind however that herbs do not grow well in wet soil. In addition, once a month you can feed your herbs with a specific fertilizer that says it is safe for use on edibles. Remember, you have to give your plants some time to get used to their new setting. Do not cut them until you see new growth. Or your plants will not flourish.

Tips For Your Indoor Garden

First, make sure that you are choosing appropriate herbs for your indoor herb garden. You do not want herbs that grow very wide or very tall. Second, if sunny windows are unavailable, you can use a fluorescent light and keep it on for about ten hours a day. Also, make sure it is close to the plants, about eighteen inches away. Third, do not trim any more than a third of your plant’s foliage. In addition trimming will often encourage them to grow more, but do make sure that there is new growth before you clip them!

All plants need three main things in order to grow successfully; sunlight, soil and water. Herbs are no exception. Both indoor and outdoor herb plants need plenty of sunshine. You should place herbs grown in a kitchen or other room in a south or west facing window to get the best kind of sunlight.Herbs do vary, but most herb plants need to be in a sunny location.Fluorexcent lamps or grow lamps can be used to supplement indoor light.Soil that is well drained and not too rich is the best choice for herb plants.Add one part sand or perlite and two parts sterilized potting soil to containers for herbs.Pour about an inch of gravel at the bottom of your pots to make sure the soil has good drainage. You can enrich the soil in indoor herb pots by adding one teaspoon of lime per 5 inch pot.Herbs grown in pots need enough water but not too much.Keep your plants moist by adding a liitle water to the pebbles and occasionally misting your herbs.Herbs grown in containers need to be watered more often than outdoor herbs, but be careful not to let the roots sit in water.

An advantage to growing herbs in a container is that you have the freedom to move them about as you please.Perennial herbs do best when placed outdoors for the summer, but annual herbs can be kept indoors all year. But all herbs should be brought indoors before the first frost to avoid damage to the foliage. There are a few exception such as tarragon, mint and chives. After being introduced to a light frost, these herbs develop firmer, fresher growth.

All herbs can be grown in containers but some herbs do better then others. You must contain mint or it can easily overtake your garden.Keeping an indoor herb garden is fairly easy. That way your herbs are handy when you want some for cooking.Follow the tips above and you should have plenty healthy, thriving herbs.Periodic light feeding and repotting every year will keep your herbs healthy. You will also have to remember to replant annuals each year and move perennials outdoors when needed. Plus, use your herbs as much as you want as well as harvest them occasionally. It is no secret that pruning plants encourages new growth. This is also true for herbs. So use your home grown herbs in your recipes, store them and give them away to friends.

Growing herb plants inside is not always the easiest method to follow, but when the days get short and the frost blankets the rest of your outdoor herbs, you will be happy you have some inside herbs. Because you are likely to use your inside herb plants in your recipes, the kitchen is a great location to grow them.

I have a big, south-facing window in my kitchen that allows full, rich sunshine to flow over my kitchen table on sunny days. That’s where I keep my herbs over the winter, for ease and because southward-facing windows give better light. Certain sunlight is still better than none at all, so don’t fret if your window does not face southward.

Because it isn’t simple to move your herb plants from outside to indoors for the winter and then back out for the summer months, I recommend that you allow the outside annuals to die with the first frost and just buy new potted plants from your local market, home improvement store, nursery or greenhouse .

That way I won’t ever have to do without my herbs and I do not have to go through all the drama about bringing in an herb and letting it get leggy.

Here are a few of my favorite herb plants that I can’t make it through the winter months without:

Garlic: Don’t forget to plant garlic in your kitchen herb garden. The pink and white flowers will add to the beauty of your kitchen and can deter pesky insects from gathering. Try making a floral arrangement of garlic flowers. They are pretty as can be and will last for many days. They have a slight hint of garlic taste. Try garlic flowers on a salad. When garlic buds start smelling garlicky, throw them out. If you get hungry, you can always eat them.

Rosemary: When you cook with rosemary, you are using one the most uniquely flavored plants around. You can pluck a couple of sprigs and sprinkle in with the rest of your ingredients. I take out my rosemary before I dish out the dish, simple because I cannot take the tough pine-like leaves and I’m too lazy to crush them. But do not let that prevent you from pulverizing it with a mortar and pestle or in a food processor.

Basil: This terrific addition to your Italian entrée is a fast herb and thrives inside. Within a few weeks, you will be able to pluck the leaves to use in a whole host of delightful meals. If you are looking in the supermarket for your plant, focus on the Sweet Basil type.

Parsley: Purchase your parsley mature rather than by starting from seeds. You will be happy with the results, because starting with parsley seeds can take a long time. Use your parsley in just about any dish. Just do not limit this lovely herb plant to the supporting role of a decoration. Its ability to improve the flavors of other dishes make it a wonderful herb to use all winter long.

After you get your kitchen garden started and going well, you can add herbs in other rooms too. Try the living room, bedroom or bathroom. Using a potted aloe vera plant to your bedroom will add a sculptural quality you’ll appreciate, just like a pot of lemongrass will make your bathroom smell fresh and clean.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

You can bring new life to your balcony by adding a few potted herbs. Having your herb plants in pots makes it simple because you can move them around (as you figure out the amount of sun your balcony gets). Their portability also helps for bringing your herb plants inside at the end of the growing season—you do not want to leave your herb plants on the balcony all winter.

Balconies are all about natural light and you will want to go with herbs like morning glories that grow well with a lot of light. These little herbs can tolerate the reflection from the windows and doors and also the heat that a metal balcony captures. Check out your balcony at different times of the day to see the quality of light, the heat and the intensity. Check to see which way your balcony faces and whether it gets more morning or afternoon sun.

A principle for balcony herbs would include any plant with a thick leaf or a velvety texture as well as any herb that is gray or silver. These unique features prevent the loss of water in evaporation.

These are some herb plants that I suggest for your balcony:

Aloe vera: Adding an aloe vera plant to your balcony will be a cinch. It tolerates the sun very well and requires little watering. You can use aloe vera easily by snipping off the tip and rubbing it on a burn or other skin problem. It will cool the place, but it can be sticky!

Cayenne pepper: If you grill out on your balcony, imagine being able to break off a pieces of cayenne pepper to add to your next dinner. This herb should do very well on your balcony and add some color too.

Cucumber: Trailing cucumber vine can add a new texture to the herb plants on your balcony. Cucumbers are fabulous for facials, ladies. You can also grab a few cucumbers to slice for your salads, straight from the balcony!

Hens-and-chicks: These are among my very favorite plants. Because they are succulents, they will hold water very well (less watering for you) and they can handle the bright sun and hot temperatures you may have on your balcony. They are adorable to look at too!

Lavender: Because lavender is a fragrant plant, you will be able to breathe in the soothing smell of lavender when you put it on your balcony. It is also a brilliant plant that adds a lovely pop of color.

Select a collection of interesting containers for your balcony or try a hanging basket lined with a coconut husk for good outcomes. I actually made my own balcony basket with chicken wire and moss. I had never attempted anything like that before. That basket was not the best thing since sliced bread, but it worked for me. It will work best if you carefully consider the drainage when you are buying your basket or container.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

And you can get ideas from amateurs as well as from professional garden designers around the world. You can even access large databases of information with thousands of plant species, but this usually depends on the community to which you belong.

gardening forums

By posting comments on a gardening forum you can share your inspiration or seek advice when you are at a loss. Participations to discussions is freely consented and if you have some great topic you want to start, you can initiate it on the gardening forum where you are a member. You will need to start by introducing yourself, whenever you are new to the community. It’s nice to just say howdy and you’ll see that people will welcome you warmly.

Any new member of a gardening forum should take a few moments and read the tips and suggestions for the use of the forum. Sometimes there are rules to be met in order to post comments. Gardeners that share their opinions on forums can provide very good ideas for growing flowers and vegetables in new and earth friendly ways. The access to information is very generous thanks to the Internet, and so much can be learned from a simple web site.

gardeners forum

When you join a gardening forum, you can choose the topic that most interests you. Viewing other comments can help you understand the members’ positions. You can just read and learn a few things from the older posts or join in and provide an individual solution or answer related to the gardening topic in question. Posts are usually monitored by moderators who also provide professional assistance when necessary. This does not prevent the freedom of speech but rather allows for the activity of the gardening forum to carry on without rudeness and controversies.

gardening forum

In case you speak some other language besides English, you can become a member of a foreign gardening forum without any problem. The Internet does not question nationality. Most people who use a gardening forum will refer to practical applications, but discussing plants and cultivation specificity from a region different than yours may not be that useful. For instance, you won’t take too much advantage of the forum experience if you live in the tropics and you chat with someone from a temperate climate area.

The more obvious reason for cultivating herbs is the benefits you can derive when adding them to food. They simply make any dish special. People have been growing kitchen herbs because they have discovered what a little amount of herb can do to their regular meals.

Of the many available varieties to grow, there are only a few that are really useful to everyday cooking. In growing kitchen herbs, pick out only frequently used herbs. Basil should not be missed out in any garden. Known for pesto pasta, this herb has a warm and spicy flavor that just brightens up any tomato dish. It is also a fine addition to soups and sauces. Being a tender annual, this plant will not survive winter if not kept indoors. You can plant this herb by sowing the seeds. Plant it where there is full sun.

Chive is also a sun-loving herb that thrives in rich soil. It is a hardy perennial with tall and slender dark green leaves. It has a mild onion taste and goes well with baked potatoes. You can plant this herb by seeds or root divisions. Plant this in the fall or spring, and give them a lot of breathing space, about 9-12 inches apart. Apply mulch around it to keep out weeds.

Dill has a slightly bitter and strong taste that is often garnished to fish, meat and poultry. Leaves and seeds of this plant can be used as seasoning, and they also compliment soups and salads. To plant this herb, choose a sunny spot with a sandy or loamy soil. Make sure the soil is well drained, and plant dill in early spring. Keep a distance of 9 inches for each plant, and sow the seeds in a 1/4 inch deep soil. Make the soil a little acidic, with a pH of 5.8 to 6.5.

A close relative of dill, fennel is likewise a fine seasoning to fish and meat. Soups and salads can also be spiced up by this herb. The leaves have a sweet flavor while the seeds taste sharper. Planting fennel is similar to dill, except that the distance between plants should be one and half feet. Add lime in case the pH level of soil falls below 6. Take note not to interplant fennel with dill, or they will cross pollinate.

Parsley is yet another classic that has been used for generations. It is a popular seasoning in fancy dishes and also in home-made soups. It is also added to salads and omelets. This plant can thrive in partial shade to full sun, and prefers a richly fertilized soil. Parsley can be planted in mid spring or mid summer. You can sow seeds, or better yet, buy a young plant and transfer in your garden.
